Questions frequently asked by prospective members about re-enactors:
- What is a Civil War Re-enactor?
- What is a Civil War Living Historian?
- What is the difference between a Re-enactor and a Living Historian?
In a nutshell, a 17th Michigan Civil War Re-enactor:
Is a male (if a military impression is selected), who wishes to learn how to become and live like a Union soldier in the 1860’s, and participate in re-enacting Civil War battles.
Is a person (if a civilian impression is selected), who wishes to learn how a civilian lived in the 1860’s, interacted with the soldiers of the Civil War, and participate in civilian camp life activities at Civil War re-enactment events.

Re-enactors and Living Historians are men and women who share a common interest in the history of the American Civil War and wish to share their interest with the public. The difference is the degree a member wishes to share their interest with the public.
Because the 17th believes that identifying the degree of involvement a member can give is personal, each member decides for themselves if they will become a Re-enactor and/or a Living Historian.
Yes, a member can be both!

Re-enactor or a Living Historian, each member is able to share their interest in the Civil War with others!
