 Equipment Placement for Inspection

Typical Shelter("Dog")Tent

The shelter the solider mostly likely slept in was the Shelter Tent, often referred to as a "Dog" Tent named by the occupants who had to crawl on their knees to enter.  Regardless, of the name, the tent  was made up of two halves that were button together. However, a soldier was only issued a Shelter Half.  So, a soldier would buddy up  with a partner (pard), and set up a tent.

Once the tents were set up, it would not be too long before a Company Inspection would be conducted to ensure the men had all cloths and equipment issued to them, and they were in serviceable condition. In order for the inspection to be conducted quickly but thoroughly, each soldier had to place his equipment in his tent on his "gum" blanket or "Poncho" in a specified place.
